Countable and uncountable nouns meaning
Countable অর্থাৎ গণনার যোগ্য।
Uncountable অর্থাৎ গণনার যোগ্য নয়।
Countable and uncountable noun - কাকে বলে?
The nouns which can be counted are countable nouns and which cannot be counted are uncountable nouns. যে সকল noun কে গণনা করা যায়, তাদের countable nouns
এবং যে গুলিকে গণনা করা যায় না, তাদের uncountable nouns বলা হয়।
Traditional English grammar এ noun কে পূর্বে আলোচিত পাঁচটি ভাগে ভাগ করা হয়েছে।
কিন্তু modern English grammar এ noun কে দুই ভাগে বিভক্ত করা হয়েছে। যেমন -
- 1. Countable noun
- 2. Uncountable noun
Countable noun - গোণা যোগ্য
The nouns which can be counted are countable nouns. যা গোনা যায়, পৃথক অস্তিত্ব আছে।
আমাদের দৈনন্দিন জীবনে আমরা বিভিন্ন রকমের জিনিস ব্যবহার করে থাকি। এদের মধ্যে কতকগুলি count বা গণনা করা যায় এই ধরনের nuon কে countable noun বলা হয়।
Examples - উদাহরণ:
Book, House, chair, fan, mango, cow, fruit, knife, fish, train, pencil, table, road, tree, player, man, student, radio, office, school, river, sea. etc...
Rules of countable noun
- এদের singular এবং plural number আছে।
- Singular number এর পূর্বে article(A,An,The) বসে। যেমন - A cow, the mango. etc...
- Plural number এর পূর্বে many, few, several. প্রভৃতি বসে।
- এই সকল noun কে singular থেকে plural করতে s/es যুক্ত করা হয়। যেমন - Pencil - pencils, door - doors, fan - fans, book - books, mango - mangoes. etc....
Uncountable noun - গোনা যোগ্য নয়
An uncountable noun is the name of a thing which cannot be counted. যা গোণা যায় না, পৃথক অস্তিত্ব নেই।
এমন কতকগুলি জিনিস বা পদার্থ আছে যা আমরা সর্বদাই ব্যবহার করি, কিন্তু সেগুলি গণনা করা যায় না, পরিমাপ করা যায়, ওজন করা যায় এবং অনুভব করা যায়, এই প্রকারের noun কে uncountable noun বলা হয়।
Examples - উদাহরণ।
Water, milk, salt, sugar, oil, rice, honesty, knowledge, pleasure, health, wealth, Glory, happiness, condition, fire, sorrow. etc......
Rules of uncountable noun
- এদের plural number নেই, পরিমাণ বোঝাতে এই জাতীয় noun এর পূর্বে much, little. ইত্যাদি ব্যবহার করা হয়।
- Uncountable noun এর পূর্বে নির্দিষ্ট করে না বোঝালে article বসে না। যেমন - water, health. etc...
- এদের সাধারণত plural হয় না। যেমন - Gold - Golds হবে না, pleasure - pleasures হবে না।
How plurals are formed
Countable nouns এর শুধুমাত্র singular - plural করা সম্ভব। যেমন -
Man - Men, school - schools, leaf - leaves,
Fly - Flies, ox - oxen, child - children. etc..
সব countable noun এর singular - plural আলাদা করে হয় না।
- 1. কিছু ক্ষেত্রে শুধুমাত্র plural form ব্যবহার হয়। যেমন - Trousers, spectacles, jeans, shorts. etc..
- 2. কিছু ক্ষেত্রে singular এবং plural form আলাদা হয়। যেমন - person - people.
- 3. কিছু ক্ষেত্রে singular আর plural form এ একই word হয়। যেমন - deer, furniture, sheep, hair. etc....
- 4. কিছু ক্ষেত্রে শব্দের শেষে 's' থাকলে শব্দটা সবসময় plural হয় না। যেমন - mathematics, news, physics. etc... এই ক্ষেত্রে শব্দটার সামনে singular verb বসতে পারে। যেমন - physics is my favourite subject.
- 5. কিছু ক্ষেত্রে শব্দের শেষে 's' থাকলেও শব্দটা singular এ ব্যবহার করা যায় এবং plural এও ব্যবহার করা যায়। যেমন - species, series, means. etc... A series of explosions rocked the city.
- 6. কিছু ক্ষেত্রে 's'ব্যবহার না করলেও শব্দগুলো plural ব্যবহার হয়। যেমন - staff, government, mail. etc.. The staff of this office are very polite.
- 7. কিছু ক্ষেত্রে অনেক সংখ্যক জিনিসকে বোঝানো সত্বেও word টা singular রূপে ব্যবহার করা যায়। যেমন - pair, dozen, couple. etc.... I have a pair of glasses. Give me a dozen bananas.
- 8. কিছু ক্ষেত্রে শব্দ গুলো দেখতে plural না হলেও সব সময় plural হিসাবে ব্যবহৃত হয়। যেমন - cattle, police. etc... The cattle are grazing.
- 9. কিছু ক্ষেত্রে a group of words এর দ্বারা plural বোঝানো হয়। যেমন :- a-couple-of, a-sum-of-money, six-year old, three month leave. etc...
