প্রিয় শিক্ষার্থী বন্ধুরা আজ আমরা Subject-Verb Agreement কাকে বলে, এর নিয়ম ও উদাহরণ গুলি জানবো এছাড়াও sentences এ কিরুপ ব্যবহার হয়ে থাকে সেগুলি মনোযোগ সহকারে বোঝার চেষ্টা করবো।
Subject-Verb Agreement
Subject এবং verb-এর মধ্যে একটা বোঝাপড়া বা চুক্তিবদ্ধ ব্যবহার থাকে। একে Subject verb agreement বলে। ইংরাজীতে correct sentence বা শুদ্ধ বাক্য লিখতে হলে বিষয়টি ভালভাবে জানা দরকার। Subject-Verb Agreement বিষয়ে কতকগুলি নিয়ম উল্লেখ করা হল।

Subject-Verb Agreement এর নিয়ম ও উদাহরণ।
i) যদি দুই বা ততোধিক singular subjects 'and' দ্বারা যুক্ত হয়, তাহলে বাক্যে verb-টি plural number হবে। Example -
- Hiya and Hena are two sisters.
- Hirak and Pulak are playing.
ii) ‘And' দ্বারা যুক্ত দুইটি subjects যদি একই ব্যক্তি বা বস্তুকে বোঝায় তাহলে verb-টি singular number হয়। Example -
- The writer and statesman has come.
- The Headmaster and secretary has convened a meeting.
এখানে প্রথম sentenceটিতে writer এবং statesman একই ব্যক্তি। আবার দ্বিতীয় sentence-এ Headmaster এবং secretary একই ব্যক্তি। উভয়ক্ষেত্রেই একটি মাত্র article 'the' ব্যবহার করা হয়েছে।
কিন্তু যদি article দুইবার ব্যবহৃত হয় তাহলে দুইটি nouns দুইজন ভিন্ন ব্যক্তিকে বা দুইটি ভিন্ন বস্তুকে
বোঝায়। তখন verbটি plural হয়। যেমন—
- The Headmaster and the secretary have come.
iii) 'Each', 'everyone', 'either', 'neither' ও 'many a'-র পরে ব্যবহৃত verbটি singular number হবে। Example -
- Each boy was given an orange.
- Everyone was given a certificate.
- Neither of these two boys is innocent.
- Many a man is sure to welcome the opportunity.
iv) যখন দুইটি subjects, 'or', 'nor', 'either......or', 'neither......nor' ইত্যাদি দ্বারা যুক্ত হয়, তখন শেষে যে subjectটি থাকে তার number ও person অনুযায়ী verb-টি বসে। যেমন----
- Either you or I am to blame.
- Neither food nor drink was found there.
v) যখন দুইটি subjects, and' দ্বারা যুক্ত হয় এবং একসঙ্গে মিলে একই বস্তু বা ধারণাকে নির্দেশ করে, তাহলে verb-টি singular number হয়। যেমন—
- Time and tide waits for none.
- Rice and fish is my favourite dish.
vi) যদি 'or', 'nor', 'either.......or', 'neither.......nor' দ্বারা singular এবং plural number এর subjects যুক্ত হয় তাহলে plural subjectটি verb-এর কাছাকাছি বসবে এবং verbটি plural হবে। যেমন -
- The owner or the workers are to be blamed.
- Neither Naser nor his brothers were present.
vii) যদি দুই বা ততোধিক nouns এর পূর্ব্বে 'each' বা 'every' থাকে এবং তারা যদি ‘and' দ্বারা যুক্ত হয় তাহলে verbটি singular হয়। যেমন—
- Every boy and girl was given a pen.
- Every man and woman works for the good of this village.
- Each and every child has been fed.
viii) যখন দুইটি subjects, 'not only.....but' কিংবা not only......but also' দ্বারা যুক্ত হয় তাহলে verb টি শেষের subject-এর number ও person অনুযায়ী হবে। যেমন—
- Not only Nikhil but I am also responsible for the loss.
- Not only Saikat but also his friends have committed the crime.
ix) সমষ্টিগত অর্থে collective noun-এর verb টি singular হয়। কিন্তু প্রত্যেকের পৃথক সত্তা বোঝালে verb-টি plural হবে। যেমন -
- The jury has found the prisoner innocent.
- The jury were divided in their opinions.
x) কতকগুলি nouns যেমন cattle, folk, people, police, majority ইত্যাদি দেখতে singul হলেও এদের verbটি plural হবে। যেমন -
- The cattle are grazing in the field.
- People want justice.
- Village folk wake up early in the morning.
- Several hundred extra police were sent to North Bengal.
xi) Economics, innings, news, gallows (ফাঁসি কাষ্ঠ) whereabouts (গতিবিধি) physics, wage ইত্যাদি noun-গুলি আকারে plural কিন্তু অর্থের দিক দিয়ে singular এবং এদের verb সৰ্ব্বদা singular
হয়। যেমন—
- Physics is a difficult subject.
- This news is too good to be true.
- His whereabouts is not known to the police.
xii) যদি subject-টি relative pronoun হয়, তাহলে তার পূর্ব্ববর্তী noun বা pronoun-এর numbe বা person অনুযায়ী verb-টি বসে। যেমন—
- Indra is one of the brave boys who were rewarded by the Government.
- This is the boy who has found my purse.
xiii) Singular subject-এর সঙ্গে as well as, with, together with ইত্যাদি দ্বারা কোন word যুক্ত হলেও verb-টি singular হবে। যেমন—
- Satish as well as Ashis is absent today.
- The king with all his men was killed.
xiv) যদি একটি plural noun দ্বারা কোন বিশেষ পরিমাণ বোঝায়, তাহলে তার verbটি singular হয়। যেমন—
- Ten thousand rupees is a large sum.
- Five thousand rupees is not a bad salary.
xv) A lot of, a great deal, most of, plenty of এবং some of দ্বারা যদি পরিমাণ বোঝায় তাহলে verbটি singular হয়। আর যদি এদের দ্বারা সংখ্যা বোঝায় তাহলে verbটি plural হয়। যেমন -
- A lot of work remains still to be done.
- A lot of people prefer tea to coffee.
